The "Cairo Tales Series: Cairo between Time and Space" workshop, held on April 3-4, offered an inspiring educational journey for 35 children. This first event took place at Beit El Meamar in El Darb El Ahmar, Cairo, and was a part of the Child Urban Forum activities leading up to the World Urban Forum (WUF). Collaboratively organized with Insan Academy, the workshop provided an enriching platform for participants focusing on the historical development of Islamic cities, starting from the era of Prophet Muhammad.
Over two days, the children were engaged in listening to stories from Dr. Faten Reda about the formation and evolution of Islamic cities through various eras. This foundational knowledge was complemented by site visits to iconic locations on Moez Street, including the El Hakim Mosque, the Qalaoun Complex, El Azhar Mosque and El Sultan Hassan. These visits were not just educational tours but interactive experiences where the children could relate their learnings to real-world architecture and history.
To deepen their understanding and retention, the children collaboratively implemented 3D models representing the basic layout of an Islamic city and Moez Street. This hands-on activity helped bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
The event was made possible through the collaborative efforts of several esteemed partners, including the Children University, Child Urban Hub, Cairo University, and Architecture and Children Egypt. This event not only raised awareness about the historical and cultural significance of Cairo's historical sites but also fostered a sense of connection and appreciation among the young participants towards their rich heritage.
