An inspiring team of 80 children, engineers, and architects collaboratively designed an ecological playground for the wetland park in 10th of Ramadan. This innovative hackathon engaged young minds aged 6-16 to envision play spaces that were environmentally sustainable and stimulating.
The winning playground design showcases the creativity of Egypt's youth to build a better future. It utilizes recycled tires, wood, agricultural waste and other repurposed materials to construct imaginative play structures, swings, seesaws, slides, climbing walls, and games. Wastewater from an adjacent treatment plant is filtered through rocks and reused to irrigate low-water ornamental plants and shaded fruit trees throughout the sprawling 1600-meter-long by 40-50 meter-wide park. A meandering stream flows through the landscape, creating opportunities for interaction.
Key features include enclosed hexagonal family areas for privacy, a cascading fountain, natural bridges made of stones for scenic views, and accessible play areas with ramps and specialized equipment for children with disabilities. Fragrant jasmine and citronella plants conceal unpleasant odours while naturally repelling mosquitos. The variety of interactive spaces, textures, sounds, and sensory experiences nurture children's developmental needs.
Edible plants, butterfly gardens, hidden mini-libraries, tunnels, hills, and trails offer active exploration. Imaginative structures crafted from pipes, tires, and wooden crates spark creative play. Signage explains how natural processes filter the water and how repurposed materials reduce waste. Mosaics, murals, sculptures, and puzzles designed by the children adorn the space.
This ecological playground concept won first prize in children's rewards nationally at the 7th Cairo International Exhibition for Innovation Fair 2023. It also represented Egypt at the UN Golden Cubes competition, demonstrating the country's commitment to sustainable development.
